Dr Hembry has seen a number of airline pilots who believe they have been made unwell by repeated ‘toxic air events’ in the course of their work. It appears that these incidents may be associated with
contamination of cabin air by ‘bleed’ air from the engine, which may be laced with engine oil components
as well as tri-cresyl phosphate, an organophosphate used to keep the oil free from any infestation.
Dr Hembry offers a package of investigations which may help to identify the likely role of toxicity and environmental illness in these cases. There is currently no formal way of diagnosing ‘aerotoxic syndrome’ which is the name coined for this condition, but certain tests may support a toxic aetiology and certain treatment strategies, particularly those centred around optimal detoxification, may be helpful in safeguarding health in the longer term. Dr Hembry’s role here is supportive, and should be viewed as complementary to that of the GP and other relevant health professionals.
